Been busy setting up my own VPS and using Cloudron to install some software, including Mastodon. So I’ll likely move my instance with masto.host to my own server this weekend. Will likely result in some downtime and lost toots/images. But I do like the idea of being more self-sufficient. Now is the time to do it 😅

A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!

So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.

This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.

A #library is a great example of an institution where humans collaborate with each other for motives beyond profit. It is a place where it is easy for everyone to understand how our relationships with strangers can be more than mere commercial transactions.

A library is, in a way, an #anarchist space dedicated to knowledge.
It has rules and we observe them out of respect, not fear.
It has experts whose authority is not arbitrary, but knowledge based.

A library is a sanctuary from capitalism.

Imagine #libraries don't exist, but there's this person who thought of them and is trying to convince everyone else about them.

-Borrow books for free? People are going to steal them!
-You can just come in to use a computer? Well that's just going to be abused by freeloaders.
-Staff? Who is going to pay them? Why should my taxes be wasted subsidising access to books for people who haven't saved and bought their own?

How many amazing things do we dismiss? What is our society missing out on?

Feeling more and more intent on setting up my own VPS (virtual private server) and moving most of my web presences there. Time to revive some of my skills from younger days. Should be fun, but also very time-consuming given how rusty I am 😅

On the light pollution of Starlink satellites:

“The fact that one person, or one company, can take control and completely transform humans’ experience of the night sky, and not just humans, but every organism on Earth … that seems profoundly wrong,” – Caitlin Casey, astronomer

”The effect […] is like painting graffiti on a World Heritage Site. But not just graffiti in one particular location — graffiti that can be seen the world over.”

I'm pleased to note that even dolphin.town, my Mastodon server where the only letter you are allowed to post is "e", has seen increased activity in the last few days.

Thanks Eeeeelon!

The EU Commission is planning automatic CSAM scanning of your private communication – or total surveillance in the name of child protection. This would be the worst surveillance apparatus outside of China:

I want to help get out the message that there are valid reasons for some of the friction and lack of features in Mastodon, while there is also of course plenty of room for improvement.

The inability to free-text search anyone’s messages or anyone’s hashtags across the Fediverse is instrumental in keeping harassers and trolls at bay. Abusers must work harder to find conversations, there are no ”quote-boosts” and no viral rewards. Incentives and abilities to torment are restrained.

Short rant about misconception of Mastodon

I read an article where the writer is repeatedly uneasy about how conversations on Mastodon are devoid of politics, ”as if the outside world doesn’t exist.” The idea being that the birdsite is more connected to reality?

It’s frustrating to me that anyone would portray algorithm-boosted rage as representative of the world stage, and real, human conversation as non-representative of the human condition and human desire.

The world is upside-down.

@standupmackan Har du sett denna guide till Mastodon för skärmläsare? Den är omfattande och mycket kan säkert hoppas över när du redan skapat konto, men eventuellt en bra referens:

@tootapp I run my own instance and have this account and my comic strip account @wildexploits on the same server. I want to log in to both these accounts on my Toot! app but can't find how to do this. Is it not possible to be logged into two accounts on the same server?

If you're currently on a massive server like mastodon.social, you might want to consider moving your account to a smaller server.

You can keep your followers when you change servers, here's how to do it: mstdn.social/@feditips/1079394

You can find reliable servers at joinmastodon.org/communities (all the servers listed there agree to the covenant at joinmastodon.org/covenant). Try to pick one with fewer people.

There are lots of good things about smaller servers:

-Better moderation, because there are more staff per member.

-Smaller servers tend to have more personality, with a village feel.

-The local timeline on smaller servers is much more readable.

-Smaller servers protect the Fediverse as a whole from being taken over, because lots of smaller servers are harder to buy than a few big servers.

-It's easier to make a difference on smaller servers. It's easier to discuss things with the admin and other members.
